The Sunshine Coast has been drenched, with torrential rain triggering flash flooding, road closures and dozens of calls for emergency assistance.
More than 200mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours in parts of the region, including Yandina, Diddillibah, Dunethin Rock and Radar Hill.
By Friday morning, the SES had received 84 calls for assistance across the Sunshine Coast, responding to reports of flooding, fallen trees and structural damage. Council’s Disaster Hub was also reporting 115 road closures across the region and surrounding areas.
On the southern end of the Coast, council brought forward the opening of Currimundi Lake after heavy rainfall sent water levels soaring across the connected lake system.
Councillor Tim Burns said the catchment received 120mm of rain on Monday, three times the forecast amount.
The opening will allow water to flow out to the ocean, easing pressure on the lake system. While some public pathways have been inundated, council confirmed no private homes or properties had been affected.
With more showers forecast in the coming days, residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of flooded roads.
