Gateway to the Future: Sunshine Coast Airport Master Plan Submitted
Big news for the Sunshine Coast! A bold new vision for the land surrounding the Sunshine Coast Airport has officially been submitted to the Queensland Government for assessment – and it’s set to transform our region into a hub of travel, business, and lifestyle.
The Gateway Precinct Master Plan outlines a mix of hotels, shops, offices, industry, and major transport upgrades, all anchored around an expanded airport terminal. This development represents one of the Sunshine Coast’s biggest opportunities to grow jobs, tourism, and innovation, while enhancing the way locals and visitors experience our region.
Highlights of the proposed plan include:
A 250-room transit hotel
A 1500sqm supermarket, plus specialty retail & dining
A childcare centre, health services & recreation facilities
A new commercial hub for offices, education & industry
Multi-level car parking & improved traffic connections
Future public transport facilities, including a potential Metro stop
The plan divides the Gateway Precinct (30 hectares) into five sub-precincts – each designed to balance airport operations with community, business, and lifestyle needs. At its heart, a green spine and three key plazas will make the precinct a pedestrian-friendly, connected destination.
The master plan also supports Project Horizon – the first major terminal expansion for the airport, expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
With six total precincts planned for the airport PDA, this vision aims to cement Sunshine Coast Airport as a key driver of regional growth while preserving environmental areas and ensuring smart, sustainable development.
The application was officially lodged on August 1, 2025 and acknowledged by Economic Development Queensland on August 12.
This is just the beginning – and if approved, the Gateway Precinct could reshape the Sunshine Coast’s future, opening doors to opportunity for businesses, locals, and visitors alike.
